“Bully in a Suit”
“Alien: Covenant.” The 6th entry to the “Alien” franchise and the 2nd entry in the prequel trilogy. I’ve quickly become a huge fan of this series, the original film being my favorite, so I was excited to watch this one.
“Alien: Covenant” follows the crew of the Covenant. A ship on a 10 year colonization mission after Earth begins to die out. Immediately, trouble starts as an accident wakes up the crew from cryosleep, and the captain (played by James Franco for some reason…) dies in his pod. We follow the remaining crew members, particularly Franco’s widow, Daniels (played by Katherine Waterston), as they follow a distress call on a nearby planet that shares many similarities to Earth.
I mentioned how this is the 2nd entry in the prequel trilogy. “Prometheus” is the film before this and you need to watch it before you see this one. I watched “Prometheus” the night before so I knew everything, but you’d be extremely lost if you never saw the first movie.
I want to say that I do like this movie. Ridley Scott knows how to direct, the cast is made up of some great actors, and it has that signature Alien look. My only problem is that pacing is a little all over the place. People die pretty quickly and we don’t spend enough time with them to really care that they die. We don’t even get to know Franco’s character before he dies. Not to mention, this movie doesn’t really have much of an identity. It doesn’t know if it wants to be like “Prometheus” or “Alien” or even “Aliens” for that matter. So what your left with is this weird mix of all 3 that sometimes works but sometimes doesn’t. That’s not to say it’s bad, it just isn’t as good as I had hoped.
Overall, I’d give “Alien: Covenant” a 7/10. It’s a good movie that needed a few more rewrites and fine-tuning to become a great movie. A definite “Give it a Try,” but only if you see “Prometheus” first.
